What You'll Learn

Over 12 weeks, students go from zero to a finished, released track — learning every skill it takes to get there.

Music Basics

Rhythm

Students learn how rhythm, tempo, and time signatures work — then immediately start building their first musical ideas in BandLab. By week two, everyone has a groove they made themselves.

Music Basics

Melody & Harmony

We cover how notes relate to each other — major vs. minor, simple chord progressions, and how to write a melody that sticks. Students play through ideas on their Akai MPK Mini in real time.

Compositional Strategy

Piece Structure

Intro, verse, chorus, bridge, outro — students learn why structure matters and how to use it to keep listeners engaged. We break down hit tracks and then apply the same thinking to their own pieces.

Compositional Strategy

Layering & Arrangement

A great track is more than a single idea. Students learn how to build energy by adding and stripping back layers — instruments, vocals, and effects — so their piece breathes and evolves.

Publishing Your Music

Mixing & Mastering

Students learn to balance levels, pan sounds across the stereo field, and apply EQ and compression so their track sounds polished on any speaker — not just the laptop they made it on.

Publishing Your Music

Releasing on Spotify

In the final week, we walk through the full distribution process together — artwork, metadata, and submission. Every student ends the course with a real track live on Spotify under their own name.

About the Course

Intro to Music Composition

Each week your student joins a small group on Zoom to learn hands-on — writing rhythms, building melodies, arranging full pieces — using BandLab, a free browser-based music production tool. No expensive software, nothing to install.

By the final session, every student has a complete original track — mixed, mastered, and released on Spotify under their own name. Not a class project that lives in a folder. A real piece they made, own, and can share.
